THE GREEN AND BLUE OF SARDEGNA
Lying about halfway between Spain and Italy, Sardegna is for size the second Island in the Mediterranean. While its Northern shores are haven to summer crowds and exclusive resorts for the most affluent, the rest of the Island is still largely unspoiled by mass tourism. Designed along the South, East and West coasts and across the mountainous inland, our tour proposes a different approach to this exciting Island. Sea and mountains: the rugged coastal routes, the thick forests of Barbagia and the passes of Gennargentu and everywhere a nature bursting out with the scents and colors of Mediterranean flora. The few tough climbs are always rewarded by winding descents and after ride swims in the emerald sea. Our selected restaurants will introduce you to the pleasures of the very original local cuisine. Remarkable selection of wines starting from the red Cannonau.

Located only 15 minutes away from downtown, Cagliari Airport has connections almost hourly with Rome or Milan, and daily with many other European cities.

On arrival day we visit the town leading bike store for last minute gear and eventual renting. Our hotel is set in a quiet section of Cagliari, overlooking the sea. Choose between the hotel's beach or pool for a first restoring swim.

Just a short loop on Day 2 to get accustomed: we ride the coastal route to Villasimius and back. The road is a roller coaster offering at every turn new striking views above the sea.

On Day 3 we ride North always along the coast. Along our way we meet a few nice resorts: Torre delle StelleCosta Rei and, to cap the ride, a swim and a lunch on the beautiful beach of Muravera. After lunch we drive by van to our next hotel right on the beach of Torre di Bari (30 min drive). On the way we stop at Jerzu for a wine taste.

On Day 4 you learn that Sardegna is not only gorgeous beaches but rugged mountains as well. This first taste of the Gennargentu mountains takes us across Jerzu, Ulassai and Gairo. The summit is at Passo Sarcerei (960 mt). On the long way down we stop at historical Lanusei to refresh with local specialties.

The first 20k of Day 5 are an easy warm up for the long climb to the mountains of the Parco del Golfo di Orosei. The cappuccino break is in the town of  Baunei.  After the pass of Genna Cogina (770 mts), a vast and undulated highland opens ahead of us. More breathtaking views until  we summit at Genna Silana (1017mt). From here it's a 25k dive into the enchantment of Cala Gonone and its bay. The hotel for the next 2 nights is one of the legend of Sardinian hospitality: Su Gologone. The unique charm and comfort of this hotel and its traditional cooking will be an unforgettable experience.

Here we will also spend our rest day: shopping in Dorgali, beach at Cala Gonone, trekking to the nuragic village of Tiscali, are a few proposals to spend actively your time but no blaming if you just want to be laying by the hotel's pool. A wine taste in Oliena right before dinner will be our aperitivo drink.

Also because on the following day we have the toughest stage of the tour. The ride is pretty easy until we spot Oliena, here we tackle the mountain of Supramonte and reach the muralled walls of Orgosolo (600 mts). Then we ride deep into the forests of Barbagia touching the 1000 mts mark in the town of Fonni. Here we stop for an energetic snack with local specialties. Long miles up and down the wooded hills and across stone villages until we summit again, over the tree line, at Passo Sa Casa. A winding descent will take us to Laconi where we have a well deserved lunch. After expresso we drive by van to Guspini (1 hr drive). The hotel in Guspini  will be another favorite of you. For its style and superior comfort,  for its large pool and the very furnished  wine cellar. Under the stone vaults of the latter we will have our dinners.

After yesterday's tough stage you will welcome the easy ride of Day 8. We circle around the odd shaped peaks of Monte Arcuentu to get easily to the wilderness of Sardegna's Western coast.
Costa Verde soon welcomes us with his lusty vegetation and deep blue sea. From the easy rolling road you see the blossoming oleander that follows the course of dry creeks, colorfully sneaking its way in the vast greenery. As we turn inland we climb to the old mining town of Montevecchio. The remaining quarters of the once florid mining district - this area was named Metalla by the Romans - are now an open air museum of industrial archeology. After a local snack or two we quickly return to our hotel. In the afternoon our van will be available to take you to one of the delightful beach resorts of Costa Verde.

Short stage but with some demanding inclines on the last day. The first is a pleasant climb to Passo Bidderdi rewarded by a breathtaking descent down to the beaches of Buggerru. From this village a steep incline takes us above the cliff. Mind to have room left  in your memory card! The last climb starts at Cala Domestica and ends, with the last mile over 10%, at Montecani. Now you can really rejoice to the end of your efforts. The winding downhilll takes us across Masua and Nebida. We are riding now the splendid Costa del Sulcis. Here the bright colors of the land, going from yellow, to red, to purple make a unique contrast with the emerald sea. The end of the downhill in Fontanamare is also the end of our ride. We take a swim and have a fish lunch in a restaurant right on the beach. After one or two expresso we drive to our first hotel in Cagliari by van (45 min drive).

* extra mileage available
